Remy vs Non-Remy Human Hair: What’s the difference?

“Remy” is a term we hear often in the wig industry, but there are a lot of misconceptions about its meaning. Today, we’ll deep dive into what Remy and Non-Remy mean so you can make educated decisions when shopping for human hair pieces.

The terms “Remy” and “Non-Remy” do not relate to the quality, length, or origin of the hair.

REMY HUMAN HAIR

In order to be considered “Remy” human hair, the hair has to be kept with the cuticle running in the same direction (just like it grows out of the scalp), processed, and then applied to a hairpiece or wig. Going in the same direction helps the cuticle not tangle as easily. This processing takes much more time and detail and, therefore, is a higher investment. This process is more time-consuming for the factories, which is why Remy hair is more expensive than non-Remy hair.

Advantages: Less tangling
Disadvantages: More expensive than non-Remy

NON-REMY HUMAN HAIR

Non-Remy human hair is not kept in its original direction. The cuticles go in different directions which means they will tangle and invert with surrounding hair more easily. The hair is processed to remove the outermost layer of the cuticle to help the hair not tangle as easily. Non-Remy human hair is collected and processed in larger batches than Remy hair, taking less processing time, which means it has a lower price.

Advantages: Lower price point than Remy
Disadvantages: Tangles more easily
